Business and life blend together for me

Really hard to plan this episode, because there were more life lessons in 2020 than I could possibly fit into one episode. So, I’ve narrowed it down to 6.

But first, I want to touch on why you shouldn’t sh*t on 2020

  • If you’re listening to this, you’re blessed to be alive.

  • There were hard moments, but let’s not throw out the entire year. (story with Ethan on hard moments vs. hard days)

  • For a long time, I felt like 2016 was the worst year of my life - the year I lost my 21 year old brother in a motorcycle accident. It was one of the deepest pains I’ve ever felt. But 2016 wasn’t a wash. There was also beauty in it. 2016 was the year that I had my first VBAC.

  • So perhaps we can shift the lens through which we see 2020?

  • It’s okay to hold space for the hard moments, the hard times AND find the beauty, the gifts, and the messages of 2020.

Doula Business lessons learned in 2020

  1. Lesson in time.

    1. In some ways, this year felt like the longest 365 days EVER. And yet, it didn’t.

    2. Many of us felt stretched with less time for ourselves & for our business.

    3. Kids home for months. Less childcare support.

    4. The lesson for me with time in 2020 was prioritizing like a Mother F-er.

    5. If it wasn’t moving the needle forward, it was moved to the back of the list.

  2. Be intentional with your life.

    1. Intentional in your business

    2. With the content that you consume (I hope this podcast makes the cut)

    3. With the people that you surround yourself with

    4. Who holds space for you, and for your business

    5. With the people that your children see you invite into your home

  3. Do more for our Black family, your fellow humans:

    1. It is imperative that you’re willing to get it wrong

    2. Have hard conversations

    3. Take imperfect action

    4. Be open to listening / unlearning and re-learning

    5. Be willing to lose friendships / relationships

    6. Course correct

    7. Speak up

    8. Buy Black, amplify Black voices, continue learning about antiracism. It is OUR responsibility to continue the work that many white people started in June of 2020… every single day.

  4. The importance of building a sustainable business

    1. A business that continues to support you when life happens.

    2. The foundation that I began building in 2017 supported me this year, while I was with my children during lockdown and at doctor appointments with my Dad in August.

    3. Life is going to continue to happen, prepare yourself accordingly.

    4. If you’re an energy worker, this might feel overwhelming for you. I’m a gridworker & that’s why I’m here.

  5. Listen to your inner guide - in life and in business.

    1. Even if that means doing the thing that your brain says is illogical.

    2. Pay attention to the signs, follow winks from the universe, that little voice inside, nods from God, messages, invitations

  6. We can grieve the massive losses of 2020, and still feel joyful and appreciative, AND move our mission forward.

    1. In fact, it’s imperative that you keep doing your work.

    2. Not just DO your work, but go BIGGER in 2021.

And since today is the last full moon of 2020 / what are you releasing?

As you create that space from release, what will you make room for in 2021?
