How to Charge Your Worth as a Doula
(Part 1 of the Get More Clients Series)
Welcome to the Get More Clients Series! This is a four-part series for Birth Professionals on getting more clients - either online or in-person. You can also catch the series on the Podcast.
Let’s dive in!
Part One: Charging Your Worth in your Doula Business
If you’re just getting started as a Doula, or if you’re just venturing into the virtual Doula space, pricing your birth and postpartum doula packages can be super challenging.
Before we get into the deets on HOW, let’s talk about WHY that is. I have a question for you to sit with (journal if you like)…
How do you feel when you tell someone your pricing during a potential client interview?
Let’s set the scene. Say you're at a prenatal interview, or a virtual discovery call with a potential birth or postpartum client. It’s going well and you reach the point where you're discussing your packages and pricing.
How does it feel to tell someone your pricing? I urge you to take a few minutes, put your phone down and reflect.
If talking about pricing feels uncomfortable or makes you uneasy or nervous - there might be an underlying issue that we need to address before moving forward.
Okay maybe I have two questions. Here’s #2: Do you feel worthy of receiving that amount of money?
It’s a tough pill to swallow, but your self-worth is directly correlated to charging money in your Doula business.
Now I’m going to ask you to get even more uncomfortable, and face this worthiness block. It’s not fun, I know. I have done this work over and over again... unpacking, learning and growing.
Even if you try to move past it, put a band aid over it, click ‘publish’ on your website and list pricing, I can almost guarantee that it will continue to show up until we face it. I’ll be right here, holding your hand (from afar) as you process.
Making money is your Birthright
Let's go back to the day that you came earth side as a human. You came to this earth with an innate knowing of your worth.
Then somewhere along the way, someone got in your head with stories and lies that aren’t true. They may have said or done things that made you feel lesser than, not as important as, not worthy of love, attention, or friendship.
All of that ^^^ IS. NOT. TRUE.
You were born worthy, and you ARE worthy today.
Making money and financial abundance is your birthright.
Shifting the Lens from Fear → Love
In birth preparation, we teach our clients about how fear can impact how we perceive pain, right? Let me Doula you in your business for a moment.
Fear can impact your pricing as well. Stay with me here.
When you're setting your pricing through the lens of fear & carry limiting beliefs around your self worth, it might sound like:
Who am I to make [insert $ amount here]?
Who am I to charge [insert $ amount here], the other doulas only charge [insert $ amount here]?
Who am I to charge more than them?
Who would want to pay me this much?
Is my service worth this much money?
Is my time worth this much?
If you agree with me that everything we do is either rooted in love or fear, what might this look like if we shifted to see pricing through the lens of love?
It is my birthright to make money.
I am worthy of receiving money.
I am worthy of charging money for my incredible, life changing, services.
It is my birthright to be joyful and experience abundance.
Tip: unpack your worthiness blocks - the sooner the better. Journal, meditate, or ground yourself to help you unravel your limiting beliefs. Otherwise asking for money might feel like you’re banging your head against the wall.
How to Charge Your Worth
Now for the precise answer on pricing, right? Not exactly. There is no right answer here. Charging your worth is a loaded question, and only you can answer this for yourself.
Go back to the first question, when I asked you how you feel when you talk about pricing. Test different dollar amounts, and check in with your body.
Do you feel yourself closing? That might not be it.
Do you feel yourself expanding? That may be where you’re at right now.
You’ll feel the right price for you.
A few things to know:
Your price (right now) should reflect where you’re at energetically.
Your pricing may shift as you rise.
If you’re offering free services right now, that’s okay. Know that you won’t always be in this specific place. Just keep going.
